Six Summer Sessions for Beginner High School and College Students

$400.00

Workshop Overview:
This immersive photography 6 session workshop is designed to take students from the basics of camera handling to advanced techniques, enabling them to get amazing shots throughout the summer. The course will be divided into thematic sessions, each building on the last, creating a smooth learning curve. Students will experience hands-on practice, professional feedback, and valuable lessons on creative exploration.

Date: Every Monday from June 30th - August 4th
Time: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: Portsmouth and the Seacoast area

Week 1: Exposure, Depth of Field, Focus and Motion

  • Focus: Understanding exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed, ISO.

  • Activities: Introduction to the basics of exposure control.

  • Hands-On: Guided outdoor photoshoot session focusing on using manual settings to control exposure.

  • Homework: Submit photos for feedback, focusing on applying exposure techniques.

Week 2: Lighting Mastery – Working with Natural Light

  • Focus: Natural light

  • Activities: Understanding light’s impact on color, contrast, and mood.

  • Hands-On: Outdoor shoot with lighting experiments—working with both direct sunlight and shaded areas.

  • Homework: Practice indoor photography with controlled lighting

Week 3: Understanding Composition Basics

  • Focus: Depth of field, focus points, and the creative use of bokeh.

  • Activities: Techniques to isolate subjects and create dreamy background blur with wide apertures.

  • Hands-On: Portrait photography shoot focusing on shallow depth of field.

  • Homework: Capture a portrait with emphasis on bokeh, ensuring proper focus.

Week 4: Storytelling Through Photography - Documentary and Street Photography

  • Focus: Candid photography, storytelling, and capturing real moments.

  • Activities: Discussion on photojournalism basics, framing moments, and engaging with subjects.

  • Hands-On: Street photography session, focusing on natural human interactions.

  • Homework: Capture a story or theme in a series of photos that convey emotion or a narrative.

Week 5: Post-Processing and Editing (Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop Basics)

  • Focus: Introduction to photo editing software (Lightroom basics, basic Photoshop tools)

  • Activities: Color correction, sharpening, cropping, and managing exposure.

  • Hands-On: Editing one of the photos taken during the workshop, following step-by-step guidance.

  • Homework: Edit a personal photo to submit for feedback.

Week 6: Portfolio Development and Final Review Graduation

  • Focus: Building a cohesive portfolio and final critiques.

  • Activities: Reviewing and selecting the best images from the workshop; arranging them into a professional portfolio.

  • Hands-On: Final photoshoot to capture the last series for the portfolio.

  • Homework: Submit a final collection of 10 edited photos for portfolio evaluation.

·Hands-On Practice: Apply what you learn each week with assignments and photo critiques designed to boost your understanding and skills.

·Instructor Feedback: Receive tailored feedback to help you refine your technique, improve your exposure settings, and master composition.

  • Final Portfolio Review: Each student will receive constructive feedback on their portfolio with guidance on next steps in their photography journey.

  • Exhibition Opportunity: Students will have the chance to showcase their work in a group exhibition at the end of the workshop.

Instructor:

Steven Weeks holds a Master of Arts degree from Southern New Hampshire University and currently serves as the Photography Course Instructor at Great Bay Community College. A lifelong learner and creative professional, Steven brings both academic rigor and real-world experience to the classroom.

As a proud resident of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Steven has developed a deep appreciation for the region’s visual landscapes and a passion for capturing moments across a wide range of photographic genres. His work is strongly influenced by the fine arts, blending technical skill with artistic expression. From street photography to still life, Steven helps students discover their unique creative voice through thoughtful instruction, hands-on learning, and an emphasis on visual storytelling.

In addition to teaching, Steven is the founder of RuneTech Studios, where he continues to explore the intersection of art, technology, and narrative through photography and digital media.

What to Bring:

  • Your DSLR or Mirrorless camera

  • Extra batteries and memory cards

  • A notebook and pen for notes

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes. We will be waking approximately 1 mile on fairly level terrain.

Pricing:
