This on-the-water workshop brings you closer than ever to Maine’s coastal wildlife…literally. Paddle the meandering tidal creeks of Scarborough Marsh, the state’s largest saltwater estuary, as we photograph egrets, sandpipers and other marshland species from a quiet, unobtrusive kayak vantage point.
From the seat of your kayak, you'll learn how to photograph birds and wetland wildlife from eye level creating more dynamic, intimate, and natural compositions. Whether you're aiming to capture feeding behavior, shorebirds in flight, or peaceful environmental portraits, this immersive experience will elevate your wildlife photography.

Level: Beginner to Intermediate Photographers
Group Size: Limited to 8 participants for personalized instruction

We don’t just teach you how to use your camera we teach you how to see
What You’ll Learn:
· Techniques for close-range shorebird photography without disturbing wildlife
· The benefits of low-angle perspective for reflections, bokeh, and natural framing
· How to safely protect your camera gear on the water
· Shooting from a kayak: balancing exposure triangle, focus tracking, and burst mode
· Subject framing strategies for BOG’s (Birds on Ground), BOWs (Birds on Water) and BIF’s (Birds in Flight)
Wildlife We May Encounter
Scarborough Marsh is a vital stopover on the Gulf of Maine flyway. In late summer, it teems with migratory and resident species such as:
· Great & Snowy Egrets
· Glossy Ibis
· Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs
· Short-billed Dowitchers
· Semipalmated Plovers
· Willets, Saltmarsh Sparrows, and more
· Bald Eagles and American Bittern are occasional
What to Bring:
· Camera with zoom lens (200–600mm ideal)
· Waterproof dry bag or Pelican-style case
· Kayak, paddle, and life jacket (Rental options available from 9-11AM at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center $40/2 Hours (207) 883-5100)
· Hat, sunscreen, bug spray, water, and a light snack
