What You’ll Learn:
Camera Settings for Sports Photography
Learn how to use shutter speed to freeze fast action or introduce motion blur for dramatic effects.
Master the use of ISO in low-light conditions to ensure sharp images without introducing noise.
Understanding aperture for controlling depth of field and isolating players in the frame.
How to use burst mode for capturing multiple frames during key moments.
Setting metering and focus modes for best results.
Lighting Techniques for Indoor Sports
How to deal with the challenging lighting of indoor courts (fluorescent lights, low lighting, and high contrast).
Tips for working with artificial light, using white balance to avoid unnatural color casts, and balancing ambient light with your camera settings.
Capturing Movement and Emotion
Techniques for photographing fast-paced action, from slam dunks to fast breaks.
How to capture emotion and intensity—free throws, celebrations, and expressions during tense moments.
Framing and composition techniques to highlight both the action and the atmosphere of the game.
Positioning and Angles
Best shooting positions on the court for maximum action shots, including near the baseline, sidelines, and above the stands.
How to anticipate key moments and position yourself for the best shots.
Experimenting with different perspectives and camera angles for dramatic shots; low, high, wide, and tight frames.
What to Bring:
Camera (DSLR or mirrorless preferred)
Lenses (Telephoto zoom lens like 70-200mm is ideal, 25mm-85 and/or 70-200mm, also fast prime 300mm (2.8 aperture) or similiar zoom lens will work.
Memory cards (at least two)
Extra batteries
Athletic Footwear and Comfortable clothing for moving around the gym and quick adjustments
Water bottle and snacks for hydration and energy
Intermediate Skills Suggested:
Control the camera on manual setting
Compose by anticipating action: They use framing, rule of thirds, leading lines, and depth of field consciously, not just by accident.
Adapt to light: They know how to adjust for different conditions indoor vs. outdoor, backlit vs. front-lit, natural vs. artificial light.
